Join Me at the Studio Wall
I recently took a sculpture class online with beloved mentors of mine. In preparation I dug up a few old reference materials that have offered me inspiration over the years that still feel relevant as well as felt interesting for thinking about figurative sculpture. Many come from old black and white films, with a particular recurrence of Charlie Chaplin. On one day we did some exercises both drawing and sculpting actions. What does the drawing “squeeze” or the sculpture “tear” look like? My drawings for some of these actions joined my wall of figures and I rather like the conversation between these figures and these abstractions but I am not entirely sure I can describe why. What does having them together do for you or make you think of? What action verb would you guess each drawing represents?
